Even before her new husband dies, Brienne fell in love with his oldest son, Rurik. The story has an intriguing beginning as Rurik sends his brother, Lyting, disguised as a monk to the abbey at Levroux where Brienne is in training to be a healer. Great writing and a story that will draw you in make this a wonderful Viking romance. Lyting, born a Dane, lives in Francia where his uncle is Duke Rollo.

Apparently possibly in book 1 Lyting was spared some fate that caused him to want to become a monk, but his brother, Rurik, thinks Lyting should take a wife and settle down. Lyting first tries to buy Ailinn, not to have her but to spare her a horrible fate. When he discovers she is destined for a harem in Byzantium, he joins the fleet that will carry her there.

And then the adventure begins, and oh, is it ever an adventure: from Danmark Denmark to Constantinople, through dangerous river rapids and deadly river pirates. The author clearly made an effort to make this an authentic Viking tale set in the history of the time, hence women taken as slaves were mistreated and raped. No surprise there. Gordon does it tastefully. The author also made an effort to date the speech to the period, which I appreciated.

There were a lot of characters to keep track of but the author did a good job of providing descriptions. And there were many place names mentioned a map would have been nice. All the same, the story drew me and kept me reading. Trust me, some of the scenes will have you on the edge of your seat! Brienne and Rurik, hero and heroine in book 1, are characters in this story and there are lots of references to their story and the characters from that story.

It helps to begin at the beginning. So, read them in order. I recommend this story and will definitely read more of the trilogy, perhaps beginning with book 1. Rhiannon means to capture Ailinn and bring her to Ireland. But Rhiannon makes a mistake and captures the wrong woman. In Normandy, Aileanor, daughter of Ailinn, and her siblings are playing in a pear orchard when Garreth of Tamworth, an agent for Athelstan, King of England, passes through and saves Aileanor from having to climb down a tree without a ladder.

After that, he is enamored of the young woman and means to make her his. How fortuitous it is that Garreth took the same ship! Garreth is plans to marry Aileanor. Rich in historical detail, Kirkwood draws a vivid picture of the Norse who lived in medieval France and the Saxons in England. She has obviously done her research into the era and the history.

The story is populated with both real and fictional characters, some from the first two in the trilogy. I do recommend reading them in order. Jan 09, Edith M Davis rated it it was amazing. Need more from Kathleen Kirkwood Loved loved this trilogy! I hated when it came to an end.

Characters are great. Laughed loved and cried though the whole book. Feb 04, Ginger Solomon rated it really liked it. There were a fair amount if errors, not so many as to be too distracting, but there just the same. Also, the descriptive sex scenes proved to be unnecessary, which I believe they are in any story. There weren't very many, but one is too many for my tastes.

Jan 25, Sandra G. Coffey rated it it was ok.

Too Long! The stories were good but what made each of them boring was they were all too long. I did not fully read each story, after about the sixth or seventh chapters, I grew tired of the stories being dragged on, so I went just read the last chapters and the epilogue. View 1 comment. Does he have what it takes to win her heart? There is only one way to find out…. Once upon a time— in May , to be exact—. Angus MacTaggert, Earl Aldriss, traveled from the middle of the Scot tish Highlands to London in search of a wealthy bride to save his well- loved but crumbl in g estate. Aldriss Park had been in the MacTaggert family s in ce the time of Henry VIII, when Domhnall MacTaggert, desp it e be in g Catholic and married, declared publicly that Henry should be able to wed as many lasses as he wanted until one of them got him a son.

When Angus in her it ed the t it le in , he realized the old castle needed far more than a fresh coat of pa in t to keep it from both physical collapse and bankruptcy. And so he determ in ed to go down among the enemy Sassenach and w in himself a wealthy bride. The English had made enough trouble for him and his over the centuries, so they could bloody well help him set th in gs right.

On his second day in London, he met the stunn in g Francesca Oswell, the only offspr in g of James and Mary Oswell, Viscount and Viscountess of Hornford— who had more money than Midas and a bevy of very f in e solic it ors—at a masked ball w here he dressed as a bull, and she as a swan. Desp it e the misgiv in gs of nearly everyone in Mayfair, Angus and Francesca immediately fell madly in love, and married w it h a special license ten days later. This made for some very spectacular arguments, because t here is noth in g more combustible in the world than an impoverished Highlands laird in disagreement w it h an in dependently wealthy English lady about his own ancestral lands.

Over the next thirteen turbulent years the estate prospered, and Francesca gave Angus three sons— Coll, Aden, and Niall— and w it h each one became more concerned that this was not a life for any civilized person. She wanted to br in g the boys back to London for proper educations and to live proper lives, but Angus refused, stat in g that what had been good enough for him would be good enough for his lads. When a fourth child, a daughter, arrived in , Francesca reached her break in g po in t.

No daughter of hers was go in g to be raised w it h an uncivilized accent in a rough country w here she would be ridiculed by proper Society and unf it to marry anyone but a shepherd or a peat cutter. Angus refused to let his lads go, but he allowed Francesca to take young Eloise and return to London—on the cond it ion that she cont in ue provid in g for the ma in tenance of the estate. Francesca reluctantly agreed, but given that she controlled the purse str in gs, she had her own cond it ions to try to keep some in fluence w it h her wild sons: All three boys must marry before their sister, they must wed proper Englishwomen, and at least one of them must marry someone of her choos in g.

She refused to allow them to be viewed as unsophisticated wild men by her London neighbors, and she rema in ed determ in ed to have a presence in their lives. To enforce her will, she conv in ced or rather, coerced Angus to put his signature to the agreement, which conta in ed this provision: If young Eloise MacTaggert did marry before any of the boys, Francesca would cut off all funds to the estate.

If they were to in sist on defiance, they would have a heavy price to pay for it — one they and their tenants could not afford. Angus and Francesca rema in ed married, but ne it her would bend enough to vis it the other ever aga in. As far as the lads were concerned, their mother had abandoned them. Now it appeared to be too late. For the sake of the property and their tenants the young men must go to London. At once.
